The Neutrogena SkinClearing Cosmetic Line
One of the aspects I have always liked about Neutrogena products is that they are both gentle and effective. True to their advertisements, I have used a number of cleansers, masks, cosmetics, and other facial products from the company and never felt my skin was dried out as a result, even with the stronger anti-acne products. This is true with the SkinClearing cosmetics as well. The SkinClearing cosmetic line is made up of several oil-free products designed to both cover and help clear acne. The active ingredient in the makeup to help combat acne is salicylic acid. Products in the line include:
- SkinClearing Pressed Powder
- Skinclearing concealer
- SkinClearing Liquid Foundation
- SkinClearing Compact Foundation
This Neutrogena makeup review includes the SkinClearing concealer, liquid foundation, and compact foundation.
My Neutrogena SkinClearing Foundation Review
Neutrogena recognizes that it acne isn't just a teen beauty problem; adult women suffer from it as well. Although my acne has improved since my teen years and is more minor now, I still suffer from oily skin and breakouts more frequently than I'd like. The Neutrogena SkinClearing makeup products work well with oily, acne prone skin types, and after using these products for several years, I am consistently happy with the results.
SkinClearing Concealer
The SkinClearing concealer comes in a pen-like tube, and you simply click to push the product out and dab on the affected areas. Although it has a sponge-type applicator surrounding with an open center where the product comes out, I find that it works best to use a clean finger tip to dab and blend over the blemished areas.
This concealer has a great consistency, not too thick and not too thin, and a little goes a long way to cover up pimples. I don't use this product everyday, but it is excellent to have on hand for when breakouts occur. I have used this product both before foundation (when doing full makeup) and alone to quickly cover a blemish before running out the door; it works well either way.
I have used both the fair and light shades (depending on the season); the concealer also comes in medium and correcting green.
SkinClearing Foundation Makeup
The SkinClearing liquid foundation makeup also has a great consistency - it smooths on easily for medium coverage. It's coverage is so smooth, in fact, I have to resist the urge to blend too cloosely around my eye area (although the foundation doesn't doesn't feel drying, the Salicylic Acid that attacks blemishes would be much too harsh for the eye area. I typically use clean fingertips to apply foundation). In many cases, this product alone covers minor blemished areas well enough that additional concealer isn't necessary. I typically use this product in the winter months because it seems to have a bit more coverage than the compact foundation, and it is not overly drying to my skin. (I do apply an oil-free daily moisturizing to my skin prior to application).
SkinClearing Compact Foundation
The Neutrogena SkinClearing foundation makeup in compact form is also an excellent foundation - it's my preferred product for spring and summer makeup coverage. Like a creme-to-powder foundation, this oil-free compact comes with a compact sponge applicator and is smoothed over the face. I like the product for when warmer temperatures hit because it has a slightly lighter coverage and a more matte finish.
Overall Rating
I am very pleased with both the Neutrogena SkinClearing foundations and concealer, and would rate them a 9 out of 10 because it has given me consistently natural-looking coverage, more even-looking skin tone, and helps dry and cover blemishes.
The oil-free formula is excellent, but I found in most cases I do need to use this oily skin makeup tip: blot oil from my skin (and sometimes reapply makeup in the T-zone) by midday -- so the oil-control aspect of the product could be slightly improved. Overall, however, I feel these are three excellent products and well worth the money.
These Neutrogena products are available at most drug stores for under $15 USD.
